From an event planning side only advice is if that's not your strong suit be cautious and equip yourself with all of the right and correct insurance and training otherwise partner with SME's that are truly experts in this area to further elevate your service to your clients.
Both great responses - thanks for sharing. Having mentored many interns over the years, I can tell you the employer recommendation definitely comes in to play later on. I've had people contact me about past interns and some I gave glowing endorsements (because they earned it) and others, not so much. It's important to give it your all - not just in the interview process - because you never know who's going to be in a position to recommend you.

Liza, you are so right. There is nothing more crucial to career success than your professional reputation. The internship search is a great early step in establishing that reputation, and every day of work is an opportunity to build it.

Employer recommendations are everything, and they can come in handy in unexpected ways -- when I worked for a lawyer one summer in college, I never thought the experience would come in handy. Until I found myself applying for a job with the court system eight years later. Could I have listed that lawyer as a reference if I'd slacked off every day? What if he and my interviewer happened to be law school buddies, and my name came up in conversation? I probably would have landed in the "don't call us, we'll call you" pile.

Good post, Caitlin. I think media relations comes down to having respect for other people - and understanding that reporters, editors, bloggers and anchors all have a job to do. Anything we can do to make their jobs easier - and to help them communicate to their audiences - benefits all parties in the long run.

Thanks so much for writing this post, Liza. It's frustrating to see resumes from candidates who are probably shining stars, but just didn't take the time to throughly review their materials before they applied.

Back when I was applying for jobs/internships, I always treated my resume and cover letter like I was only applying to that one position. That meant EVERY resume was tailored to the job's specific qualifications, and I wrote a brand new cover letter to go along with each. Even though I would spend several hours applying to a job, it was worth it.

Thanks, Candace! I agree - I think it's the fact that we care so much about what we do to do it right that makes it feel so personal. And yes, you're great at your job, so it must be working for you! :)

Liza, I couldn't agree more with this post! While the "it's just business" refrain is something I tell myself at times, I think I've come to accept the fact that work issues do feel incredibly personal to me. The fact is though, that I think that's a good thing. The fact that I do feel things personally is a direct result of the passion and enjoyment I take in the work that I do and the clients that I have - which simply makes me better at my job (I think). And I wouldn't trade that for anything.
