3 reasons you should be using an editorial calendar

Chances are if you’re managing your clients social media channels, you’ve blankly stared at the computer screen more than once asking yourself, “What should I write about today?” A question that might cause your day’s social media posts to fall by the wayside when there just isn’t time to sit around and think.

That’s why I emphasize the importance of planning. I live by editorial calendars and it’s probably, ok definitely, the only way I am able to manage the channels of multiple brands on a regular basis while maintaining my sanity.

If you aren’t currently implementing an editorial calendar into your social media strategy, there’s no reason for you not to start today. It does take time and energy, but I’ve discovered that my social media efforts are much more effective when an editorial calendar is in place.  Here are a few reasons why:

  1. The big picture. – An editorial calendar is a great way to see a holistic view of how key messages are distributed. It also provides your client with tangible expectations for their channels in the upcoming weeks. Tip: I’ve found it beneficial to fill in the calendar with key topics as placeholders before adding any copy.
  2. Less stress. – As I previously mentioned, having to search for social media content the day you need to post, can be stressful. It’s not always easy to find content right away, and by planning ahead, you have more time to research and brainstorm. Having pre-drafted posts ready to go can really come in handy when your workday gets hectic.
  3. Eliminating errors. – I always try to have my editorial calendar completed at least two weeks in advance. This way, I can have another set of eyes review the posts before sending a final draft to the client.

Don’t get me wrong – It’s still important to keep up with current events and update your social channels accordingly, even when an editorial calendar is in place. As we all know in the world of PR, when big news hits, you may have to change your strategies. However, all in all, an editorial calendar is a huge benefit that can help you get the most out of your social media efforts.
