Do we really have one of the most stressful jobs?

I came across an article listing the top 10 most stressful jobs in America not too long ago, and was surprised that public relations made the list – the number two spot, to be exact. It fell right below commercial pilot and above such careers as stock broker and corporate executive.

Of course, the term “stressful” is subjective and varies between people – but it’s hard to imagine that what I do on a day to day basis is in the ranks of an emergency medical technician (which claimed the number nine spot). Public relations as a career takes on many roles and functions as well. There’s more than just a wide variety of settings to practice PR, but a totem pole of opportunities ranging from internships to senior management roles.

Regardless, it is rewarding to see public relations make the list. Even in my short experience, I understand the stresses and responsibilities of maintaining a brand’s image and key relationships – especially in crisis communications events. But is it really the second most stressful job in America? I’m interested to hear everyone else’s thoughts.
