Bring the fun back

Do you love what you do?  Are you happy to get out of bed in the morning and go to work?  Are you having any fun?

Don’t tune me out when I saw this, but I can honestly answer yes to each of those questions. It wasn’t always like that, and it’s taken some trials and tribulations for me to discover what I’m really passionate about – but I’m proud to say I genuinely love what I do for a living. I love the work, I love the people. Sure there are good days and some not-so-good days — but for the most part, I can’t wait to get up and head into the office each day to see what’s going to unfold.

All to often I come across people who are unhappy with what they’re doing. Whether they’re in a job they don’t like or feel like they’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, they just appear miserable. And it affects their whole attitude and outlook on life.   They’re Debbie Downers.  (I know you know these people – but hopefully YOU’RE not actually one of them).

I know not everyone has the luxury to make a living doing what they love – sometimes you have to find a creative outlet in another way, like a hobby or a volunteer opportunity, while you keep your day job to pay the bills.  But the point is, no matter WHAT you’re doing – it’s important to have a little fun.

Life’s too short (or too long in some cases) to do otherwise. I challenge myself with this notion whenever I get too overwhelmed with deadlines and stresses of everyday life — I ask myself, “Am I having fun?”  If I’m not, then I take a good, long look at my situation and figure out how to change it.  I’ll go grab a drink with a friend who makes me laugh, I’ll check out a new book I’ve been wanting to read, I’ll grab some of the FCPR team and force an emergency ice cream trip to break up the afternoon.

Someone once told me, “Life’s not a dress rehearsal – you only get one shot at it, so make it good.”  I like that idea and try to make myself slow down and appreciate what’s right in front of me, instead of wishing my life away to the next stage.

Kim and I went to the Sugarland concert together this year - now THAT was a fun night!

What about you?  Do you love what you do for a living?  How do you keep the fun in your day to day routine?
