Planning for the SCPRSA Professional Development Conference

Shelley and I have the opportunity to help plan this year’s Professional Development Conference for the South Carolina chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). It’s an event held every fall to bring together communications professionals from across the state to network and learn about important trends in the public relations industry.

Although neither of us have attended a PRSA Professional Development Conference in the past, we jumped into the planning committee willing to help. Since the meetings started a few months ago, we’ve come up with new ideas to raise attendance, gathered data from members to determine session topics and brainstormed potential speakers.

While the conference isn’t until November, we are already confirming speakers, nailing down logistics and considering budgets. Event planning always brings unique challenges, but working with five other individuals in different locations across South Carolina is definitely a test of the group’s ability to collaborate.

Since we don’t have the chance to meet in person, we must rely on email and phone calls, and we all share documents to keep each other updated in between monthly conference calls. Many of us are also new to planning this particular event – today we discussed how we could search for sponsors, although none of us has experience securing sponsorships.

Despite the challenges, we are already seeing the event take shape, and we’re excited about the speakers and sessions the conference will have on tap. Stay tuned as we keep you up to date on our progress…
